The University of Alberta is one of the leading research-intensive universities in Canada with over 15,000 employees. The Department of Financial Services (Financial Accounting and Reporting unit) invites applications for the position of Senior Financial Accountant (SFA) that will provide expertise in the area of capital and fixed assets accounting (including capital additions to the system, amortization, capital grant revenue, and deferred capital contributions). The University has a large capital asset base of almost $2 billion as of March 31, 2009. Annual capital additions can be as high as $500 million. The SFA would be responsible for the financial accounting, financial statements and note disclosure for the University’s audited financial statements. This position will also be responsible for related capital asset areas such as asset retirement obligations.
The Senior Financial Accountant is one of five SFA’s reporting to the University Chief Accountant & Manager Financial Accounting. The Financial Accounting unit is responsible for the corporate accounting function, preparation of the University’s audited financial statements and developing/maintaining a financial accounting and reporting infrastructure that supports many levels of users across campus. Each SFA is accountable for specific areas of expertise and, as part of the overall team, will take on other financial accounting and reporting business activities.
Qualified applicants will require:
- A university degree and professional accounting designation
- 5 years capital and fixed asset experience at a senior accounting level; preferably in a not-for-profit environment
- Working knowledge of GAAP
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability for advanced use of systems and tools (Excel, Access, nVision and other database query tools) and accounting software; experience with PeopleSoft Financials would be an asset
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Planning, organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently
This full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $59,570 - $99,282 in accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement.
