Career Profile: Susan McIsaac, FCA
~ Lorie Murdoch
In 1984, stay-at-home mom, Susan McIsaac, decided one day that she wanted another dimension to her life. She had already worked in agriculture after earning a plant science diploma, married, and had two sons. It was time for professional expansion. She enrolled at Sackville, New Brunswick’s Mount Allison University because it was close to her home in Amherst, Nova Scotia.
“I thought a B Comm would be practical,” McIsaac says from the offices of McIsaac Darragh Chartered Accountants in Amherst. She graduated from Mount A in 1988 at the top of her class, and considered law or an MBA, but chose accounting so she wouldn’t have to re-locate.

~ Daniel Wong, LL.B, MIR
Many employers hold the belief that it is difficult, if not impossible, to terminate incompetent or underperforming employees for cause. As a result, employers often allow such employees to remain in the workplace for months or years or provide separation packages when the decision is made to finally terminate the employee. Neither of these approaches benefit the employer since they can detrimentally affect the morale or performance of other employees or encourage them to adopt what they perceive to be a lower standard of performance tolerated by the employer, or motivate them to perform poorly in the hope that they too will be rewarded with a financial payout to leave the organization.

Financial Services Facing Skills Shortage
There is a shortage of high-quality, skilled professionals to fill positions in the financial services sector in Canada, according to a survey of senior business and HR executives. The hardest positions to fill are in risk management (33%) and compliance (28%), followed by credit management, investment finance and wealth management (22% each). Almost one-half (48%) indicate they expect the skilled labour shortage will continue for the next couple of years. As a result, 80% of 590 respondents project either a loss of business opportunities (40%) or a lack of bench strength (40%) to support business operations this year and into the next decade.
